What is depression?

Depression is more than just feeling down for a day or two. It's a serious mental health issue that causes persistent sadness and a loss of interest in things that used to bring joy and pleasure. Treatment options such as therapy or medication can help people manage symptoms and gain control over their lives again. Taking steps to build supportive relationships with friends and family members can also have a positive impact on the journey towards recovery.

According to National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 21.0 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. This number represented 8.4% of all U.S. adults.
